July :: Vladimir Alexander

Vladimir Alexander, the son of a Costa Rican father and a Mexican mother, was born in Houston, Texas. At the age of 5, he was discovered by his father drawing on the interior walls of his parents’ home. Throughout his teenage years it was important for the artist to have experienced discipline as an amateur boxer and the rhythm of practicing guitar by incorporating their philosophies into his art. In 2014, he graduated from the University of Houston and earned a BFA in studio painting.

Vladimir focused his artistic practice to drawing and painting. He began to experiment with various techniques ending with a style resembling to the impressionist painters of the nineteenth century. Inspired by the artworks of: Claude Monet, Anders Zorn and Philip de Laszlo; influenced the artist by understanding their use of color and movements of their applied brushstrokes.

“A mosaic of brushstrokes,” the artist describes his fascination of painting. Vladimir recognizes the importance of color but also of applying his use of each brushstroke. For example, closely examining the details of his paintings one may see a full barrage of brushstrokes or a simplified gesture.

Vladimir inspires to create what he feels, and sees, in his image. He painted a bullfighting series inspired by his fathers’ history as a former bullfighter and Vladimir recollection of watching a live bullfighting scene during his time in Mexico. Vladimir focused his attention on painting only the bull by capturing its movements and strength within the ring.

Vladimir enjoys drawing and painting peoples portrait. He begins his attention to capturing the eyes stating that “the eyes are the windows to the soul.” Alternating with the eyes and reaching towards the background the artist in hopes tries to translate his subject’s character and his own energy towards the completion of the painting.

Vladimir also paints popular and polarizing icons from the previous century too our contemporaries. This includes painting portraits of: musicians, comedians and to our current president of the United States of America, Donald J. Trump.
